From Jared Sandburg's Cubicle Culture column in The Wall Street Journal:
"If Bill Gates invented the telephone and Alexander Graham Bell invented email," notes Dennis Fluegel, a retired senior project manager, "we would all be saying, 'You should get one of these telephones, you can actually talk to someone, hear what they are saying, and you don't have to use a keyboard!' Better yet, use Skype. Then you have the choice, voice or text, in the form of instant messaging. Oddly enough, many people are more comfortable with text these days.
Bonus: your long distance calls to other computer-based Skype users are completely free.
Extra bonus: If you have web cam (built in to the new iMacs and many new laptops) you have add visual to your audio, free teleconferencing. However, I've used it, and after the initial gee-whiz moment I think it's overrated.
Know what's really going to kill email? SOX (the new acronym for Sarbanes Oxley) and the emerging requirements for keeping, filing and indexing the damn things. They are not worth that much trouble.
