This Washington Post graphic shows what each tax break is expected to cost this year and allows you to sort breaks by category, such as education or health. Altogether these tax subsidies almost equal tax collections.

I searched in vain for the cost of the exemption of muni bond income, or the exemption for the investment income of endowments. Those things dwarf the cost of charitable contributions, which I did find.

The cost attributed to 401(k) plans is bogus, that is not an exemption but a deferral. All that 401(k) money does get taxed eventually.

Fascinating how the truly rich have already managed to take their biggest tax breaks off of the table.
